US national team point guard Stephen Curry commented on the team's performance in the exhibition matches leading up to the 2024 Paris Olympics. The US national team played a total of five exhibition matches, winning every single one.
"Clearly LeBron James stepped up as a leader in the fourth quarter, which gave us a huge boost. But overall, we haven't shown our best offensive game yet.
"If we focus on our defense and our rebounding, nobody can beat us. That's how we were able to come back in the last two games," Curry said in an interview with the NBA press service.
Team USA's winning tour was an important part of its preparation for the Olympics, allowing it to come together as a unit and work out any kinks before the high-stakes competition begins. Curry believes the team's defensive intensity and ability to make timely plays will be crucial to their success in Paris.
"We have so much talent on this roster, but talent alone isn't going to be enough. We have to lock in defensively, break the boards and make the hustle plays that win championships," Curry said.
One of the key elements Curry stressed was the need for the team to play unselfish, team-oriented basketball. “It’s not about individual stats or who gets the most shots. We all have to be willing to make sacrifices for the greater good of the team. When we play that way, we’re virtually unstoppable.”
Curry also praised the leadership of LeBron James, who at 39 is making his fifth and final Olympic appearance. "LeBron has been through it all at the highest level. He knows what it takes to win on this stage. Him steering the ship is invaluable for us young guys.
With the Olympics just weeks away, Team USA is focused entirely on its quest for a fourth consecutive gold medal. Curry is determined to cement his legacy as one of the greatest American basketball players of all time.
“This is the opportunity we have all been waiting for. Representing our country on the biggest stage and bringing home that gold medal, there is nothing that compares to that feeling. We are leaving no stone unturned in our preparation because we know the world will be watching.
Curry and his teammates have embraced the pressure and expectations that come with being the favorites. They understand that anything short of gold will be considered a disappointment, but they are prepared to rise to the occasion.
