"I never thought about it." Curry on Klay Thompson

I never thought about that. Curry talks about Klay Thompson

Golden State Warriors star point guard Stephen Curry shared his thoughts on the departure of his longtime teammate and backcourt partner, Klay Thompson, who recently signed with the Dallas Mavericks as a free agent.

“It’s tough, there’s no denying that. Klay and I had hoped to finish our careers together, cement our legacy as one of the greatest duos in NBA history,” Curry said in an interview with ESPN. “But at the end of the day, I just want him to be happy and in a situation where he can thrive.”

Thompson played his entire 11-year NBA career with the Warriors, forming a formidable “Splash Brothers” tandem with Curry. The two-time All-Star had been a cornerstone of Golden State’s dynasty, winning three championships and making five consecutive NBA Finals appearances from 2015-2019.

“The idea of us riding off into the sunset together, winning more titles — that was the dream. But the NBA is a business, and sometimes those storybook endings don’t come to fruition,” Curry acknowledged. “I’m going to miss him terribly, both as a teammate and as a friend. We’ve been through so much together.”

Curry reflected on the countless memories he and Thompson created over the past decade, from their early days as rising stars to their championship runs. “The way we fed off each other, the chemistry we had — it was really special. There’s no way to replace that kind of connection.”

Despite the bittersweet departure, the four-time NBA champion expressed optimism about the next chapter for himself and Thompson. “Klay is going to do great things in Dallas. He’s still an elite two-way player when he’s healthy, and I know he’s hungry to prove he can lead a team. For me, I can’t wait to see what the next era of Warriors basketball has in store.”

Curry stressed that his own commitment to Golden State remains unwavering, even as the roster around him continues to evolve. “This is my home, these are my people. I want to continue to build on the legacy we’ve established here. The goal is to win more championships, and I’m confident we have the pieces in place to do that.”

Looking ahead, the future Hall of Famer acknowledged the challenge of adjusting to life without his teammate on the court, but believes the Warriors can remain a force in the Western Conference. “It’s going to be different, no doubt about it. Klay and I had such a unique bond, on and off the court. But I’m ready to lead this team in a new direction, to write the next chapter of Warriors basketball.”
