Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry has commented on Los Angeles Clippers star Kawhi Leonard's decision to retire from the US national team.
“Kawhi gave it his all during the last three days of our training camp. USA Basketball management and Kawhi’s representatives had a conversation to ensure he was physically ready to compete on the court. It was a difficult decision, but Kawhi was willing and eager to play. However, as he left our facility, he wished us the best of luck in achieving our goals. His support means the world to us.
I sincerely hope that in the long run, everything works out for him, because the game needs him. When Kawhi is not on the court, we lose one of the greatest players in the world. We will just have to hope that he is healthy and ready for the next NBA season.
Curry expressed disappointment in Leonard's departure, but understood the difficult circumstances. Leonard has been plagued by nagging injuries in recent years, and the national team's medical staff wanted to make sure he was in top shape before committing to the rigors of the Olympics.
“Kawhi is a fierce competitor and a true professional. I know how much he wanted to represent his country. But at the end of the day, his long-term health has to be the top priority. We will miss his presence, but we respect the decision that was made.
Team USA will certainly feel Leonard's absence, as he was expected to be a key contributor on both sides of the ice on the wing. However, Curry believes the team has the depth and talent to overcome his loss.
“We have so many elite-level, versatile players on this roster. Guys who can impact the game on both ends of the floor. Kawhi is irreplaceable, but we have more than enough firepower to get the job done in Paris.
Curry noted the team will have to rely even more on its chemistry and cohesion to compensate for Leonard's absence. "We've really come together as a unit the last few weeks. Guys are sacrificing their individual agendas for the greater good of the team. That's going to be crucial, especially against top international competition."
As the Olympics approach, Curry is focused on leading the United States to its fourth consecutive gold medal. He sees it as a chance to cement his legacy as one of the greatest American basketball players of all time.
